11/14 (Tue) Students gave up by & on Harvard (Host:Janice)

文章 Janice Wang »

Hi there,

This is Janice, who finally mustered up enough courage to host a meeting on 11/14. Welcome everyone to join the meeting and shed some light on this very subject.

Graduating from Harvard, an elite school that brims with promises and significance, almost guarantees a golden ticket to a decent job and paves the path to a bright future. However, not every prospective students and current undergraduates can sail all the way through to the convocation. Let’s take two sessions to discuss some pertinent and prevalent questions related to the subject.

Here you go and enjoy (or suffer??)!

Session I Students gave up by Harvard

Harvard withdraws 10 acceptances for ‘offensive’ memes in a private group chat

Questions for session 1

1) This Harvard incident is a perfect example to demonstrate that actions we take online can actually come back to haunt and bear down on us.
1a) Do you think making a private group chat record public or as evidence against people violates the freedom of speech?
1b) Will you be more cautious about your online postings/discussions after reading this article? Have you experienced or know anyone who has been mired in a similar situation? How did it turn out?
1c) Are there any topics/subjects you would never consider engaging in online? Why?

2) Academic intellect is an established factor in college admission; however, recently, the moral character seems to have been assigned with a heavier weight on college applications for institutions to hone in on the perfect applicants that represent the school spirits.
2a) Do you think the approach mentioned above is an effective and feasible way to separate the wheat from the chaff?
2b)How can those applicants stack up against each other in an impartial process given that there are online reputation management firms, such as BrandYourself, which can manage to scrub one's troubling online tracks clean.
Would you consider giving it a try to assist you in landing a job or uni admission? Why/not?

3a) Do you think the decision made by Harvard is fairly justified or is considered punitive over those students involved?
3b) In your opinion, what kind of punishment will effectively help mend people's wrongdoings and redirect them to the right path -- a harsh one or a lenient one?

Session II Students gave up on Harvard

The 13 Most Successful Harvard Dropouts

Questions for session II

1a) What’s your take on dropouts? Which drop out, if any, has impressed you the most? In what way? (not necessarily from Harvard)
1b) Did you ever consider 'dropping out" from school? If yes, what triggered you and how it turned out? If no, what was the reason that kept you in school?

2a) Some illustrious dropouts are popular speakers at different events. Do you think they make a convincing case to give speeches to prospective students and graduates on the importance of education and graduation?
2b) In your sense, what made those well-known dropouts rise and shine? Would those successful dropouts reach the same achievements if they completed their degrees instead?

3) “Delay graduation", a burgeoning trend, has become a phenomenon for university students in Taiwan. According to the article provided below, one in six students proceeds to delay graduation.

3a) What ramifications can dropping out or delayed graduation inflict on a student? Should an intervention plan be introduced to facilitate a better education system for all students?
3b) Why is there such a polarized perception towards education between students in Taiwan and the USA? Would those students still make the same decisions if they were to switch places? (i.e. North American students in Asia and vice versa), why or why not?

4a) How important was school education to you in your youth? Have you ever harbored any doubt about it? Would you credit or blame your current achievements/failures on your education in school?
4b) Do you believe in an elite school that can get you a foot in the door on a promising career? Do you think diplomas still prevail around the world, particularly, in Taiwan?

Hey, I'm totally qualified on this. They kicked me out from my first university so I've got first-hand experience. Good for me.
