8/25(Sat) Why People Believe in Conspiracy Theories (H:Mike)

文章 Michael-liu »

A conspiracy theory is an explanation of an event or situation that invokes an unwarranted conspiracy, generally one involving an illegal or harmful act carried out by government or other powerful actors. Conspiracy theories often produce hypotheses that contradict the prevailing understanding of history or simple facts. The term is often a derogatory one.

Conspiracy theories rely on the view that the universe is governed by design, and embody three principles:
1.nothing happens by accident
2.nothing is as it seems
3.everything is connected.

Foreign Examples:
1.9/11 attack was designed by the US government
2.JFK assassination was designed by mafia gangsters and the US government
3.The cause of death of Princess Diana was not a car accident, and was murdered by UK government or Royal Family.
4. The missing of Malaysian Airline flight MH370 was orchestrated by CIA

Taiwan Examples:
1.The “Two Bullets” event that helped 陳水扁 elected as President was designed by his own campaign team.
2. The car accident happened to 陳水扁's wife, 吳淑珍, was designed by KMT
3. The cause of death of the director 齊柏林 was not a helicopter accident, and was murdered by construction developers.
(因為齊柏林導演拍攝的看見台灣, 得罪了很多開發商)

Why do people believe in conspiracy theories? Please read the following article.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog ... y-theories

2. Do you have any friends who believe in conspiracy theories very much?
3. Can you think of or have you heard of any other conspiracy theories?

Session 2

1. Do you agree that conspiracy theories provide a sense of understanding and certainty that is comforting?
2. Do you agree that people who feel socially marginalized are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories? Is this the case for your friends who believe in conspiracy theories?
3. Since self-image(面子問題) trumps facts every time, is it a waste of time to argue with people who believe in conspiracy theories?

I can't help but think of the similarity between a big believer in conspiracy theory and a sceptic. Perhaps Luis could help us understand their differences?

I see eye to eye with the study's conclusion on the reasons for believing in conspiracy theories - the desire for understanding, certainty, control, security and the desire to maintain a positive self-image. I am just curious as to how studies was designed to testify the hypotheses in a scientific and reliable way. The researchers pointed out that an effective study has to directly examine the believers. Since they had already believed in the theories before the study, how could researchers compare their then and pre-believer mental states to conclude that they had become more secured and in better control of their life?

Also, we advocate a theory generally because we think it's truth. It's not easy for a person to do thorough self-diagnosis, even with the help of psychologists, and confess that they just "want to" believe in it for some others reasons such as thirst for understanding or certainty, etc.

I guess so. Even it's nothing about self-image, conspiracy itself is hard to be testified because if it's true, the official must cover evidence or create false one to protect their version of story. The public are just like audience who are watching shadow play on the other side of screen; we never know what really happened behind the scene. 8)
