7/20 (Sat):Taiwan Natural Disasters News (Host: James)

文章 James Chen »

Hi all, this is James Chen, I am going to host a YoYo meeting next Saturday (7/20),

A couple of months ago, I attended a conference, some EMTPs shared their experience in dealing with a mass incident...

I don't want to face any disaster, same as most of you,
But if it comes to us, it is ruthless

So, let discuss this subject based on a previous one from Rosie viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4084&p=29622&hilit= ... ter#p29622

And, I want to add one question for your session one discussion: Did you have any experience in a natural disaster in Taiwan or other countries, please share your story to your group. (As more as you can)(If you had one only, pls share it as long as you can : ) )

Session 1 : Hell freezes over in Taiwan, death toll rises to 52

25/01/16: 52 people have died as Taiwan experiences some of the coldest weather in living memory.

36 people died in Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan, and a further 16 in Kaohsiung, mostly from hypothermia and the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
In Taipei, the temperature fell to 4°C, the lowest level ever detected in the city in 44 years, and may drop further to 3°C early today.

Focus Taiwan reports that the deaths were due to hypothermia and cardiovascular disease as those vulnerable to the cold were caught off guard by the abnormally cold weather.

Twice as many critical cases were brought into the Taipei Medical University Hospital as on a normal day, with most cases reported as sudden cardiac death, stroke and myocardial infarction.

The deaths come as Southern China experiences some of the coldest weather in living memory, with ice and snow gripping a part of the world which seldom sees temperatures in single digits.

Session 2: Power quake hits southern Taiwan

Feb 7 2016: More than 100 people remain trapped under the rubble of a 17-storey building, as rescue teams race to find survivors after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan. At least 26 people were killed and scores injured when the quake struck the city of Tainan about 4:00am local time on Saturday.
More than 1,200 firefighters scrambled with ladders, cranes and other equipment to the ruins of the 17-storey residential building that collapsed. Over 170 people have been rescued so far.
The Tainan emergency response centre said a 10-day-old infant and a small child were among those killed in the disaster, which came two days ahead of Lunar New Year celebrations, a major public holiday.

The natural disaster that left me with the deepest impression was a typhoon flooding our apartment when I was about five or six. Back then the house sit in a low-lying lane right next to Jing-mei River. My family and I lived on the first floor, where was particularly susceptible to flooding, but I was too little to know that.

In the middle of the night, my parents woke up my brother and I for wet mattress. They first suspected one of us wet the bed but soon realized that the apartment was flooding. We were quickly relocated to the fourth floor, thanks to the kindness of a neighbor. According to my dad, in the aftermath of the typhoon my brother and I had quite some fun staying with the neighbor, while he and my mum toiled all days cleaning up all the mess.

A light line of stain left on all walls of the apartment marked how high the flood had once been, reminding me of the bittersweet experiences – arguably bitter to my parents but exciting to my brother and I – whenever I see it.
