8/27(Tue.) Alain de Botton on Love (Host: Luis)

文章Luis Ko » 週三 8月 21, 2019 9:24 pm

hi all, i'm Luis, the host for next Tue. meeting. this time i won't make your life, i mean the meeting, hard. i know i always chose serious topics, but not this time. in this coming meeting we are going to talk about love, oh sorry, it's love again. by courtesy of our beautiful president Christine, i got this youtube clips. i have to admit first that i'm not a fan of Alain de botton, i don't even know who he is, nor do i like to watch or listen to this sort of speech, but i do find there are some interesting points about relationship in this clip. hope you will take some time to watch it and will get some good ideas for your relationship and, for the meeting lo~

questions:

1. what do you think of romanticism mentioned in this speech? are you one of the heirs of it as the speaker says? why are you a fan, or not a fan, of romanticism?

2. why do you think the speaker says that the way we love is very dependent on our society? do you agree? what's your opinion?

3. according to the speech, we have this idea that romanticism tells us we should be ourselves in a relationship. should we be honest? is there conflict between love and honesty as mentioned by the speaker? what is it?

4. "the person was probably a little bit too normal and too healthy. they didn't satisfy your requirement for suffering. so that we say they weren't that attractive a little bit. they are nice but a little bit boring or something"
as the speaker mentioned in this speech that we kind of go for suffering in a relationship which quite matches the saying 男人不壞女人不愛 or what. do you think what the speaker says justifies the claim? what do you think about it?

5 there are something the speaker want us to know in order to be better lovers. the first thing we need to understand is let's stop treating our partners as if they were adults. let's start treating them like small children. does it make sense to you? why?

6. "when you embark on a journey of love, pessimism in fact is the most generous and kindly emotion that you could direct towards yourself and your partner."
why do you think that is?

7. though the question is quite similar to q5, there's a saying in this speech that it's sort of like a lovable idiot is a sign of love. what do you think is the reason? do you agree?

8. do you agree romanticism has caused us a lot of troubles in a relationship, and it's the greatest enemy we face for love? why?

9. romanticism is a very particular ideology. it seems no harm at all, but according to the speaker, it's kind of the root cause of our relationship problems. what's your opinion about "ideology"?

please note that there won't be question sheet provided.

Did I hear something like "Treat your partner like a 2-year-old baby" in the video? :D BTW, I like his hairdo.
