9/17(Tue) How power changes the CEO brain (Host:Wenhan)

文章 wenhan1122 »

Dear YoYo members,

It’s my pleasure to be the host for the gathering on Tuesday evening, 09/17.

We used to comment “change the position (or butt) then change the brain” on politics. It turns out, this modern proverb is true and validated by studies. We will further address these studies on session 1, and discuss how power could change a person’s mindset

For section 2, I like to discuss a topic “ How to speak up for yourself” via an TED speech. This video takes 15 minutes only but there are many useful strategical skills mentioned in this video which you may use one, or two, of them in the future.

SESSION I

Please read the article of CNN via the link below.
How power changes the CEO brain
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/09/30/succ ... index.html

QUESTIONS:
1. In the article, it mentions “ People with power may also start to be less empathetic…..” and so on. Do you agree with this statement? Why or Why not? Please share your experiences regarding this aspect, if any.

2. We assume that CEOs, mostly, should have fought their ways out from bottom to top through their entire career years and should have been sensitive and known people better to inspire (or manipulate, if necessary) the teams toward the goals. Based on the studies, why could the power reverse their brains, psychologically, to be less empathetic (“and they become more self-oriented and less likely to see things from others' perspectives")? What could be the possible psychological transformation?

3. If you are an CEO of YoYo English Institute and there is a request from the board to re-shape the faculty organization, which leaves you two options,
a. Lay off the teachers aging 45-55, and recruit the younger teachers with degrees abroad requesting only averagely 2/3 monthly pays of the old teachers
b. Remain the faculty intact and send the teachers aging 45-55 to training, however, the training expenses will eat up 30% of the revenue this year and next year.
If you are the CEO paid very well in this business, what would be your decision, a or b, to fulfill the big picture? Why?

4. The society is a natural hierarchy. “Power can accentuate your general tendencies, good or bad….. So on the upside, if you were born compassionate, "the odds are higher you'll be compassionate if you gain power,"”
a. Would you like to gain more power to help this society? Why? Or Why not?
b. Would you have the confidence that once, willingly or unwillingly, you are gaining bigger power, your compassion could lead you onto positive way using it? Or you actually know you may use it to fulfill some of your personal desires?

5. In the article, it says” …..The NeuroLeadership Institute even posits that the cognitive effects of power could help explain incidents of corporate greed and sexual harassment.” Similar to question 4b., let’s have a role play to dig this finding deeper, please pick either of listings below for a scenario and explain to your members why you made the mistake and how the psychological changes affect you (ex: You are an official committing to sexual harassment)
Role: 1. Corporate CEO 2. Government official 3. School teacher
Commit: 1. Sexual harassment 2. Embezzlement 3. Bribery

SESSION II

How to speak up for yourself

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEDgtjp ... EDgtjpycYg

QUESTIONS:

1. Are you a person who dares to speak up for yourself oftentimes? Under what kind of circumstances would you speak up for yourself? And, under what kind of occasions would you not to?

2. In the speech, it mentioned that “Gender double bind” is actually “power differences in disguise”, i.e. the low-power double bind
Did you ever observe the similar situation that your female fellows took less occasions to speak up for themselves? If they did, do you think it’s because of the education/society/tradition imposed on females or their positions (i.e. less powerful positions)? Or, both?

3. There are many tactical skills to speak up for yourself as presented in the speech, such as Mama Bear, perspective-taking, Signal flexible to Gain allies…and so on, did you ever use any of these before (or even combining two or three of them) to speak up for yourself? And, which one do you personally consider it very useful? Please share your experiences with your members, and share with us if there are other negotiation skills.
