Hi all, This is Douglas.
This weekend let's explore some cultural difference (if any) in recent News. Please note that we will begin at 15:00 (1 hour earlier than usual), and Arthur will invite Yoyo members to enjoy the Rugby World Cup final after the meeting!
First part
<article> Why Prince William Loves Budget Airlines
http://money.com/money/5652160/prince-william-budget-airlines/
Here are an article discussing low-cost carriers:
https://onemileatatime.com/what-is-a-low-cost-carrier
Questions
1. If you were British (or belong to another kingdom and), how would you feel about having a king or queen? Would you agree to pay tax to support the royal family?
2. The very reason why public attention was paid to stories like this is the popularity of the royal families among ‘their people’, which is true in many kingdoms like the UK and the Netherlands. How do you explain such a phenomenon in modern times?
3. How do you think of the media speculation that Prince William took a low-cost flight in a private trip to build a ‘thrifty’ image?
4. What’s your opinion or experience on the budget (or low-cost) airline? Do you enjoy taking it or not? Do you think it will be the trend in the future?
Second part
<article> Arrest Us, Please! Extinction Rebellion’s Path to Success
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/08/world/europe/extinction-rebellion-london-greta.html
Here are Extinction Rebellion's demands:
https://rebellion.earth/the-truth/demands/
Questions
1. Do you support Extinction Rebellion's demands? Do you reckon they will succeed? To what extent?
2. One of the methods used by them is to break the law and get arrested, a classical ‘civil disobedience’ action. Do you agree with it? Would you do the same as the judge in the article (Saying thank you and still granting a fine)?
3. Another method used is to make disruption (to the traffic, for example), which has been also carried out more fiercely in recent movement in Honk Kong. Would you tolerate such protest to a certain degree? To what degree?
4. It seems that western societies are more tolerant to such protests, and that Taiwan is more hesitant towards them. Do you agree? Are we becoming more open to those? Why?
