3/30 (Tue.) Positive psychology (Host: Rock)

文章 Rock »

Session One
Positive psychology

https://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_t ... etter_work
Suggested questions
Warming up: People use many different ways to stay positive. Please list all the ways you can think of to be positive. Remember to add up anything you stumble upon during the discussion. The team that gets the most items will have a prize.
1. Please make a guess at people's positivity. Who is the most positive person at your table? Who is the one in Yoyo? How about the world? Why do they look positive to you?
2. On the news, most of the information is negative. Does it make you any less positive reading news? What kind of people or things make you less positive, too? How do you get it better?
3. It seems that the English mania in China follows the formula that "If you work harder, then you'll be more successful, and if you're more successful, then you'll be happier.". Are you also following this formula? Why does Shawn Achor's positive psychology want to reverse this formula? Do you agree with him? Would it work for you?

Session Two
Fast, happy, and impulsive

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog ... -you-happy

Suggested questions
4. Why do people enjoy speed? What are some of the cases that people enjoy speed? Do people at your table also like them?
5. What things would you speed up in your life? Would you be happier if you do it? Why or why not?
6. What are the things that you don’t want them to be done quickly? Why?
7. What's the difference between impulsiveness and spontaneity? Do you feel good when you get impulsive and do something crazy? Does impulsiveness go with consequences? Please share your stories with us.

It’s probably much easier to identify a bunch of negative persons than to find a positive one in YoYo. :)

I am going to make a wild guess that why the host chose this topic. I think his goal is either one of the followings or maybe both:
1) To solicit advice how to get unstuck from the negatives
2) To get endorsement (or to prove his point) that positive thinking is not helpful, not useful, not reachable or even not worthy pursuing.
Sorry for the bluntness, my dear host! (But it’s fun!)

After delving into the positive psychology, my summary is: (I know it is too long... Sorry!):

1) Reality vs. the Lens of your views: “Not reality that shapes us, but the lens through which your brain views the world that shapes your reality”. Isn’t this echoing some famous Buddhism sayings?)

2) “Happiness is fleeting”: It’s a proven fact that people do not linger in the happiness arena. We “upgrade our goalpost all the time”. I really love this statement, “Happiness is on the opposite side of success.” It is so true that pursuing happiness will always be in vein.

3) “Well-being” may be a better goal: As said, well-being is not equal to happiness. It is more of a process to build positive emotions, engagement, relationships, finding meaning, and sense of accomplishments. (ideas coming from 5 pillars of well-being)

4) Finally, mere positive mindset is not enough, hard-work is essential and continuous practice is required. The practice could be simply writing journal, reciting 3 things you are grateful daily, or any mindfulness exercises to get you unstuck from the negatives and move to actions.

5) Actions do not guarantee success, but through the steps of above, by now, we’ve acquired the “learned optimism”, in which we learn joy can be cultivated. Hopefully someday we can reach the stage of “natural happiness” (be happy for whatever we get) by practicing enough “synthetic happiness” (to manufacture what we don’t get)! :)

It's fun indeed!

I'm trying my best to be less cynical as my friend Luis says, so 2) is out. And I've been unstuck for sometime and 1) doesn't matter, either. Here I dare to claim that positivity is my second nature; thanks to all the self-brainwash done intentionally.

Isn't it a bit contradictory that something hard is required to be positive? Is there no easier way? Now I am not so positive....

positive thinking is definitely useful and helpful. it's one of the many ways to get happiness, though i have to admit i lack this ability. the only problem is if it's achievable, i would say.
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!

You definitely have this ability, or you wouldn't have survived to this time. Let's fight about it if you disagree. :ssmile:
