Studio Ghibli - The Captivating Craft (16:26")

Studio Ghibli is a renowned Japanese animation company that has produced 25 movies in its 38-year history. The studio’s films are known for their beautiful hand-drawn style, profound themes, and unique narrative style. Studio Ghibli’s films often tell the stories of children or teenagers living in a fantasy world and emphasize the relationship between humans and nature. In contrast, Disney often focuses on stories of princesses and princes; Pixar focuses more on character emotions and growth and tries to incorporate real-world problems into its films. Studio Ghibli and Pixar are both industry leaders, and their films have their own unique styles and characteristics.

Studio Ghibli’s films are diverse, ranging from sober stories of World War II like “Grave of the Fireflies” to fantastical stories with magical beings such as “Spirited Away”. The studio’s films are more relevant than ever thanks to their overarching themes and pertinent messages. For instance, the studio’s environmentalist messages are most prominent in movies like “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind,” “Pom Poko,” and “Princess Mononoke” . Each movie tells a different story but lands on the same fact that humans are a part of nature, and their destruction of it dooms themselves. The magic of most of the films is in the natural, the community rather than the self, and in household labor that is usually treated as unskilled/unpaid in a capitalist society.

Co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, is critical of modern technology, capitalism, and globalization, and his works show this. Miyazaki is known for his strict work ethic and high standards. He is known to be a perfectionist and has been quoted as saying that he would rather quit making films than compromise his vision.

Q3: ...Why Miyazaki films are often centered on young and strong female leads? Are women mentally stronger than man?

On the countrary, I believe why those female characters impress us so much is simply because they are not like ordinary women we see. Women are mentally strong in peace time, but in chaos and disasters men can react better because they are not as sensitive as women.
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.
