6/25 (Tue.) Dopamine control technique (Host: Tashi)

Hi Everyone,

It is my pleasure to host again and this time I would like to share some information/idea about letting dopamine work for us properly. It seems releasing dopamine is a great thing and this term is getting popular recent years. But I have been feelling puzzled that how could releasing a specific chemical substance is alwasy a good thing to human being and I heard a lot of advertisements such as "meditation can help release dopamine so it is good" or "jogging can help release dopamine which is very good exercise". Well, I do think meditation and jogging exercise are good but that kind of statements still sound not reasonable.

Around 2 weeks ago I found some video clips that seem reasonable and more neutral.

* Words from Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology and by courtesy, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine.

You may start from a 4.5 mins short clip:

This it sounds a good idea, you can take more - a 8 mins short clip explaining the logic behind and what excites me is about releasing dopamine, it is not always the more the merrier.

Here is also another lecture from Dr. Jordan Peterson about pornagraphy addiction that I feel quite correlated.

Whether you finished the former 2 short clips, the last is what I love most. An 2 min clip pointed out that behavior is the control panel of everything. I hope you would not go for this one and just this one only :D .

For session 1, I would like to use those materials to raise conversations:

1. Before this session, what is your idea about dopamine?
2. After catching the information and idea in those videos or from your table members

a. Would you think the mind practices good diea to put into action?
b. Could you relate them to some job or life experience in your lives?

For session 2, I was thinking that we could extend this to an angle a bit farther. Meet David Goggins, a man with no background but achieved an American United States Navy SEAL, an ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete.

Among all his publis speeches, I was moved most by this 1 min clip:

And you may be wondering what is the connection beween his effort, his life pholosiphy. For me, all his speeches continually reveal the connection but I think this 10 mins clip should be comprehensible and practical for most of us.

After you watched it (in detail or skim through), some of you might have the same question that why he has the patience and perseverance for his goal? He answered in this clip below and for me it is a good reflection:

Then here I try to list some questions as well for our conversation:

1. Let's asking ourselves: When there is no more talent, what happens to you?
2. Like what he did for studying, read again and again until you kept thos material in mind and keep digesting it no matter how slow. Do you have similar experience and do you buy it?
3. Having a purpose seem very serious and diffulcult. Do you believe that we all need a purpose in some definition and why?

Important Notes:
1. We advise participants to print out the discussion questions and bring them to the meeting for reference. As for the supporting articles, feel free to print them out, as well, according to your preference.
2. We suggest that participants read the articles and think about the questions in advance.
3. Newcomers should prepare a two-to-three minute self-introduction in English to deliver when called upon by the host before the start of the discussion. The host may also ask you to give brief feedback about the meeting at the conclusion of the meeting.
4. We conduct the entire meeting in English. All participants should have at least moderate English-conversation skills and be able to articulate your ideas for each discussion question.
5. We welcome newcomers and other guests to attend the meetings and join the discussion freely for two times. After that, we hope you will consider becoming a YoYo English Club member. We charge a NT$1500 lifetime membership fee, or NT$1000 for students.
