01/20 (Tue.):The Anxious Generation (Host: Lewis & Annie)

Hi yoyoers,

Have you ever noticed parents allowing their child to watch an iPad during dinner or on the train? Or perhaps, as a parent yourself, you’ve found it necessary to let your child watch something in 3C devices just so you can have a moment to rest?

From Bill Gate’s review of Jonathan Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation, it highlights several critical issues concerning the mental health of today’s youth. Let’s talk about the critical issues that we are facing.

TED Talks Daily Book Club: The Anxious Generation
https://www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_haid ... generation

Session I:

1. What role do smartphones and social media play in teenagers’ lives—are they tools or burdens?
2. Why are teenage girls especially affected by the impact of social media?
3. Is the idea of a traditional “carefree childhood” still achievable in today’s world?
4. Have you ever felt anxious or stressed due to excessive use of smartphones or social media?
5. How do societal pressures and expectations contribute to the mental health issues observed in today’s youth?

Session II:

1. How can parents balance the need to protect their children with allowing them the freedom to face challenges and grow?
2. How can educational system be supportive to promote critical thinking and emotional well-being in the digital age?
3. Imagine you have a new born child: A smartphone is not just a device, it’s a gateway to the entire world, allowing the world to reach your child. So, at what age would you want this to begin?
4. Reflecting on your own experiences, how has the digital landscape affected your mental health or that of those around you?

the young generation are born and live in the internet era. it's easier for them to get all kinds of information than people used to through smart phone and computer. however, we all know there are too many fallacies, and harmful stuff nowadays, especially on the internet. after being bombarded by those stuff, more often than not, they would inevitably fall for some of them.

there is one of my favorite quotes, if not favorite, "Don't just teach your children to read. Teach them to question what they read. Teach them to question everything". guess we had better be sceptics for living in the digital age. I can't say it's the solution but, definitely what we have to educate the young. 8)

In my observation, junior high school kids today are not more stressed than 25 years ago. There was no relly "carefree childhood" then; there is no "carefree childhood" now. 3C products may have affected them, but it's on both sides, good and bad, because it's a tool and it's up to the users.

If there were this experiment which kids are divided into two groups. The experimental group are without smartphone and internet, the control group are the same as what we are doing now. After ten years, which group of kids would do better in the modern world?

If there were this werid kid who refused smartphones and internet, would the parents be happy or worried?
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.
