【Case Study 1: DEI Must Die?】
Elon Musk stated on Twitter that "DEI must die," arguing that the focus should be on ending discrimination rather than creating new forms of it. Musk claimed that DEI initiatives undermine merit-based hiring by prioritizing skin color and gender. He criticized DEI for conflating equality of opportunity with equality of outcome, using moral arguments to promote a version of diversity that he considers artificial.

【Case Study 2: College Admissions Standards Cannot Use Race as a Guarantee】
The nonprofit organization Students for Fair Admissions sued Harvard and UNC for considering race in their admissions process to benefit Black and Latino students, arguing this ignored academic performance and discriminated against Asian students. This conservative position, endorsed by corporate leaders, challenges the fundamental approach of DEI initiatives.

【How to Prohibit by Trump?】
1. Executive Order:
Trump signed an executive order that clearly requires the federal government to recognize only two genders: male and female, and prohibits the use of the concept of "gender identity" in official documents.
Restrictions on Transgender Athletes: This executive order also prohibits transgender athletes from participating in women's sports, claiming that this move is intended to protect the rights of female athletes.

2. Cancellation of Medical Protections:
The Trump administration has called for an end to the use of federal funds to support gender-affirming medical procedures, such as hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery.

3. Exclusion from Educational Protections:
Trump plans to exclude transgender students from the protections of the Education Amendments Act (Title IX), which also affects school policies regarding students' use of pronouns, bathrooms, and locker rooms. For example, a transgender woman (assigned male at birth) may be forced to use the men's restroom, which would impact her safety and mental health.

4. Military Ban:
During his previous term, Trump signed a ban prohibiting transgender individuals from serving in the military and stopped providing related medical benefits for active-duty transgender service members.

Important Notes:
1. We advise participants to print out the discussion questions and bring them to the meeting for reference. As for the supporting articles, feel free to print them out, as well, according to your preference.
2. We suggest that participants read the articles and think about the questions in advance.
3. Newcomers should prepare a two-to-three-minute self-introduction in English to deliver when called upon by the host before the start of the discussion. The host may also ask you to give brief feedback about the meeting after the meeting.
4. We conduct the entire meeting in English. All participants should have at least moderate English-conversation skills and be able to articulate their ideas for each discussion question.
5. We welcome newcomers and other guests to attend the meetings and join the discussion freely twice (including on-site and online meetings). After that, we hope you will consider becoming a YoYo English Club member. We charge a NT$1,500 (NT$1,000 for students) lifetime membership fee.

First, you may have noticed that we’re now sharing topics for our Tuesday and Saturday meetings. This is a test run for the first two weeks of February, aimed at reducing the overall workload for our host leaders and hosts.

Thanks to the hosts! This is a timely and thought-provoking topic. DEI and LGBTQ rights are encountering challenges similar to those affirmative action faced years ago. These measures were initially intended to support underrepresented groups by ensuring equal and fair opportunities. However, these measures have often faced backlash over time—either the protected group was overprotected, or other groups perceived them as unfair. Any artificially imposed standard of fairness and equality tends to struggle to hold up in the long run.

Ultimately, I can’t help but wonder—perhaps it’s all "God’s fault." Life is never fair, so any attempt to play God and define fairness for everyone is bound to be fruitless. Yet, can we really sit on the sidelines and do nothing when we see the underprivileged suffer?
