3/8 (Sat.) YOYO can help (Host: Johnie)

文章 Johnie »

Hello everyone, I’ve always had a dream regarding Yoyo (or perhaps it should be called an ideal, as dreams are often unattainable). I hope Yoyo is not just Yoyo.

How should I put it? In my view, the members of Yoyo are a very fortunate group of people (myself included). We have opportunities to practice English together regularly, which in a way means we are not burdened by the worries of daily life. On the other hand, we are confident and disciplined because we can discuss various topics in not our mother language.

However, my dream is that one day Yoyo can step outside. On that day, we will not only be just a group practicing English and having fun but also can help rural areas to inspire the children there, to ignite in them a passion for English and a curiosity about the world. I hope we can bridge the gap in English learning resources between them and urban children. I would like to invite everyone to discuss this together.

In the first session, I will explore the case of TOMS shoes. But plz don’t watch the second video before you figure out and discuss the first and second questions.

Session I
1. In the past few years, TOMS Shoes was famous for its "One for One" model, where for every pair of shoes sold, another pair was donated to someone in need.
Would you like to support their products if you needed a pair of shoes, and their design and functionality perfectly met your requirements? Why or why not?

2. TOMS Shoes has successfully used storytelling to connect with consumers emotionally. Can you think of other brands that use similar strategies to create a social impact?

3. What are the benefits and drawbacks of this approach for both the company and the communities it serves? Such as concerns about creating dependency or undermining local economies. How do you think TOMS could address these criticisms while still maintaining its social mission? What changes or improvements would you suggest to their business model?

Session II
Session I is just a warm-up. For Session II, we’ll use a TED Talk that we’ve discussed before as a useful reference. 1. What are practical and achievable suggestions for helping children in rural areas learning English? Can you share any specific ideas or examples?

2. To avoid repeating the mistakes of TOMS Shoes, try to imagine yourself as a child or parent in a rural area. What do you think Yoyo could do to truly help you?
2-1. Besides rural children, who else do you think Yoyo could help? And in what ways?

3. Please watch and remember the children's smiles in video above. Do you think a touching slogan and belief or emotional appeals are enough to sustain altruistic behavior and acts of kindness? What mechanisms could be used to make altruism as a lasting tradition or a proud achievement for Yoyo?
