3/11(Tue.)Has social media increased procrastination?(Host:Mandy)

文章 mandy chen »

Hello everyone,I haven't hosted the meeting for a while.

This time, I’d like to discuss two topics that I’ve been concerned about lately: social media and procrastination.

I started focusing on these topics based on my personal experiences, as well as my observations that in today’s digital age, people of all ages are constantly focused on their smartphones.

It seems that whenever there’s free time, many people tend to turn to social media first, rather than taking the opportunity to connect with themselves or those people around them.

And when we have important tasks to do, simply opening social media for a few minutes can quickly turn into half an hour—leading to procrastination on what we originally intended to do.

So, in this meeting, I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences regarding social media use and procrastination.

If you have time, feel free to check out the video links below, but if not, no worries—just come and discuss together! 😊

Questions for Discussion:
Session I:Social media in our daily life

Q1.Aside from work, how much time do you spend on social media each day? When do you usually use social media?

Q2.What is your usual purpose for using social media? For example, do you use it to connect with others, relieve stress, get new information, etc.?

Q3.Nowadays, people of all ages can be seen using their phones anytime and anywhere. For example, during meals, family members or friends may be watching short videos instead of having face-to-face conversations, or people waiting for the MRT or bus are often glued to their screens. What are your thoughts on this phenomenon?

Q4.Based on your experience, does using social media usually help relieve your anxiety, or does it make you feel even more anxious the more you scroll?

Session II: Procrastination

Q1.In what situations do you tend to procrastinate the most? What are the reasons behind your procrastination?

Q2.Have you ever delayed something you were supposed to do because of social media? How did you feel about that experience?

Q3.Have you ever faced difficulties because of procrastination? What are the benefits and drawbacks of procrastination?

Q4.Have you ever tried any methods to overcome procrastination?

Not only social media, internet surfing, binge watching, fun book reading, pachinko playing, etc. also increase procrastination. Actually, all static entertainments increase procrastination, unless we learn to be active from them.

I’ve realized that preparing to host YoYo meetings is what I procrastinate on the most.

Once assigned, I’d map out deadlines—when to choose a topic, draft questions, and finalize the write-up—counting backward from the posting date. Even with months to prepare, I rarely finished early. No matter how much I wanted to free up my time for other things, I still procrastinated until the last minute.

Why did I procrastinate on this? It’s similar to the composition assignments in school—I never felt my work was good enough. I kept putting it off, thinking I could polish it more.
That’s why I admire great writers, authors, and poets. I once considered writing or compiling my thoughts after retirement, but I think I’ve let go of that idea. :(

People often think that constantly looking at your phone in public means you’re not being social or you’re ignoring what’s around you, which usually gives the negative impression that you’re wasting your life on trivial things.

But I think that’s just a stereotype. There are lots of reasons people use their phones in public. They might be reading e-books, catching up on work, or chatting with friends or family. Even if they’re just scrolling through social media or watching videos, that’s totally fine.

Everyone has their own way of interacting with others. It’s a bit of a romantic idea to think that without technology, we’d all be talking face-to-face more. Also, nowadays there are various ways people communicate and get information. How tech affects our social habits and behavior is a complex issue to conclude.

Agree, perhaps recognizing the reasons behind our procrastination is more important than attributing to an "external culprit".

I also procrastinate to post this topic
I think the reason might be both"social media" and "procrastination" are broad topics, how to focus on a specific direction makes me pause and thin for a while.

Some articles and videos mentioned that the high standards we set for ourselves might be the reason we procrastinate. So...I decide to start from my personal reflection. :)

I agree with your opinions! Based on my own experience, sometimes I use social media at that moment to respond to work messages, learn about unfamiliar fields through others' sharing, or even to avoid face-to-face awkwardness.

So, I believe the motivation behind using social media at any moment are different. Approaching it with "awareness" might bring a broader perspective.
