Long time ago, not being able to find the word "theist" in Longman Dictionary, I asked a native English speaker how he calls a person who believes in the existence of God, or gods. He told me that there is no counterpart of the word "atheist", and he would just call them "religious people".
Well, the word does exist. At least the religious professor is calling himself one.
