...Maybe I just feel frustrated in dealing with this subject...
Oh, my lady, don't feel frustrated and being forced in any way. Just like you said, we have done a great job discussing the blue and green thing last time. So this time, surely we will make another fun discussion. No problem. It's another opportunity to show that we can handle sensitive topics rationally.

I think identity is not necessarily an yes-no question. It's complicated and multi-faced, just like you said, so the answers could be varied, too. Personally, I take my identity as Chinese Taiwanese. It's likely that I'll live in Taiwan for the rest of my life, but it's also OK for me to live in a city in China if all these political issues can be settled peacefully in the future. Actually, many Taiwanese have already done so. I don't think they are stupid, or traitors.

On the contrary, in the Middle East, we see some people who raise the banners of patriotism, swear to fight for their believes, and lead their countries into war. I truly wish God, Buddha, Allah, Monkey King and all the other divine beings, big or small, can keep us away from this kind of patriotism, be it on the land of China or Taiwan.

stephen185 寫:Debate: Are Taiwanese People Chinese?
This might be a good debate topic if Taiwan had not been suffering from the ideological manipulation by those poloticians for such a long time.
Yes, so you, as our big brother, should come out and said something. No time no see la!! Stephen.

Anyway, it's so good that we have Dan with us. We wouldn't dare to touch these sensitive issues if it's not for him. The discussions turned out to be thought-provoking and exciting, both in Dante and on this forum. Besides, he is always friendly and willing to share his ideas in a never-condescending way. Really a nice guy, Dan is.
And I welcome any foreigners who care about Taiwan to join Yoyo. It surely benefits our discussions. Many many thanks. :D

I would like to say that I am one New Zealander in Taiwan.
But, I like to say that I am a Taiwanese at most of time.
The diversity is the marrow of human wisdom.
Nobody like to be forced to identify him/herself as one specific identity.

Be happy who you are.

An epiphany just hit me. When I was viewing TED using the totally irrelevant key words "beautiful" and "under 15 minute", this talk came out. The speaker happened to not know where his home is, just like some of us?

I am a Chinese, also a Taiwanese.

When I call myself a Taiwanese, it means I am from Taiwan. It’s the same as people in New York City call themselves New Yorkers. I feel attached to the island, where I live for my entire life.

I also consider myself a Chinese. For one, I am a citizen of Republic of “China.” It totally makes sense to view myself as a Chinese when it comes to nationality. But hold on, the “China” that I feel loyal to is not the “China” that people across the strait refers to. It’s easy to tell that I do subscribe to the idea of One China, Two Interpretation.

Culture-wise I am a Chinese too. As a matter of fact, most of the artwork, poems, articles that I learnt at school were written or created by historical characters who lived in mainland China. I write and speak Chinese. Like it or not, I am deeply influenced by Confucius and his thoughts. The Chinese New Year that people in the island are about to celebrate is an important part of Chinese culture. I am not sure if I am deprived of Chinese culture, what can be left and how deep or sophisticated will it be.

A hypothetical question: What would the foreigners think about us if Taiwan reunified with China peacefully? Would it upgrade our international status or degrade it?

Right, as we joked around in our "postmortem" at MRT station, I hope Martians actually exist and invade earth, by then we may feel all these indentities are meaningless!

I think they would mostly degrade it and say Taiwanese have "stockholm syndrome". And if you ask them (Americans) what they think about the Californians who want to be independent and separate from the U.S., they would say that is nonsense! :)

OK. We have enough sarcasm.

Maybe we should take a break from a series of politics discussion lately? I would.

Yes, once or twice a year is good. Or we could be addicted to it.
By the way, the "Stockholm syndrome" guy is so cool, it's fun talking to him.

Like Iris and Rock, after two meetings in a row on politics of Taiwan, I think I can say that I got discussing politics out of my system and need some high five before taking another one. I however feel interested in collecting articles on this and categorizing expressions that could be used for future discussion. Stay tuned!

Don't underestimate yourself, Luis. You are at least on a par, if not better, with him when it comes to personal charisma.

Cool, I'm looking forward to hearing what you would like to say further. :D
